Cover | Maddy Lake
Untitled, (colored pencil, 9″ x 12″). Maddy Lake of Danville is a senior at San Ramon Valley High School and was selected as the winner of The Monthly’s 2016 annual cover art contest. This portrait is of Michelle, one of the artist’s friends, with a life vest in a piece that displays interesting perspective. Maddy worked from a photograph to complete the piece, using colored pencil, one of her preferred mediums. Maddy also likes doing illustrations and is exploring a more cartoonish style as she does more art. She has an Etsy page, MaddyLakeArt, by the way, and is accepting commissions for portraits.
NEXT MONTH: In The Kilduff File, Paul Kilduff hits the jackpot with Michael Schiess, Alameda’s original pinball wizard who is working hard to move the Pacific Pinball Museum into the historic Carnegie Library as its permanent home. Meanwhile, Reese Erlich talks music and politics with iconic Barbara Dane, still a hellion at 90; and restaurant reviewer Ethan Fletcher is up to something delicious.
