COVER | Naomi Binger

Untitled (acrylic, 2019) Piedmont High School senior Naomi Binger won first place in the 2019 student cover art contest for this untitled self-portrait of herself peering with one eye closed through the bottom of a Mason jar. The 17-year-old said she worked painstakingly to get the colors of the painting to match exactly the hues in the photograph, taken in art class during Fun Photo Week. Binger also likes working with colored pencils and a limited color palette and said she has already started a new large-scale art project at school this year. “Don’t feel obligated to follow restrictions. Go with what you think looks right,” she said when asked to offer advice for other young artists.

Faces of the East Bay

In the Philanthropic Swim

In the Philanthropic Swim

Rockridge residents John Bliss and Kim Thompson may live far removed the gritty flats of East and West Oakland. But this philanthropic couple see themselves as one with the citizens of Oakland, particularly those who are struggling financially, and they’re leading a campaign to get their “financially blessed” peers to invest in the community like they have by funding city programs to teach kids how to swim.
