Self-portrait (ink and watercolor). Madeline Moe is a Piedmont High senior who says her self-portrait is a cheerful expression of herself and the Bay Area environment she loves. This summer, Moe studied printmaking and ceramics at the California State Summer School of the Arts. A student who also enjoys French and lacrosse, Moe plans to continue her artistic endeavors in college, but has no plans for art school. Moe’s self-portrait was the winning entry of some 50 pieces submitted to The Monthly’s eighth annual cover contest. More information about Moe and the second- and third-place winners can be found on page 4 and the inside back cover this month. Monthly publisher Karen Klaber will present awards to the winners and four honorable-mention winners on Sunday, Sept. 21 at the Museum of Children’s Art (MOCHA; www.mocha.org), 538 9th St. in Oakland. All of the winning entries will be on display between Sept. 21 and Oct. 12 at MOCHA.
