COVER | Shimura Tatsumi
Marumage (Hairstyle of married woman), 1953 (Japanese woodblock print courtesy of Zentner Collection). Shimura Tatsumi (1907-1980), birth name Shimura Sentaro, started his career at the age of 32 as an illustrator for magazines and novels. He became a popular artist known for his paintings of fashionable beauties with long eyelashes and vivid lips. In his his later years, he devoted himself exclusively to nihonga, traditional Japanese art that often depicts medieval life. Because Tatsumi was primarily a painter, his woodblock prints are held in high esteem among collectors. This print and many other works of Asian art and antiques are available for purchase at Zentner Collection, 5757 Horton St., Emeryville, open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment, 510-653-5181, www.ZentnerCollection.com.
