Fire Chief (2015, photomontage and acrylic on wood panel, 58 x 48 inches; source material: Philip Metcalfe by Pompeo Batoni). Deborah Oropallo was born in Hackensack, N.J. She received a B.F.A. from Alfred University and an M.A. and M.F.A. from UC Berkeley. Oropallo’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the de Young Museum, the Boise Art Museum, Montalvo Arts Center, and the San Jose Museum of Art. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at the Whitney Biennial, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Corcoran Gallery Biennial, the Jewish Museum, and the Richmond Art Center. Oropallo’s work has been featured in two monographs: POMP (2009), published by Gallery 16, and How To, published by the San Jose Museum of Art. Oropallo is also a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Award, a Eureka Fellowship from the Fleishhacker Foundation, the Engelhard Award, and a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. Rockridge residents John Bliss and Kim Thompson may live far removed the gritty flats of East and West Oakland. But this philanthropic couple see themselves as one with the citizens of Oakland, particularly those who are struggling financially, and they’re leading a campaign to get their “financially blessed” peers to invest in the community like they have by funding city programs to teach kids how to swim.
