Face No.12 after Rogier van der Weyden, 2000 (mixed media, chine collé). Donald Farnsworth is an artist and director of Magnolia Editions, a fine art publisher and studio for experimental art projects in Oakland. He and his partner, Era Hamaji Farnsworth, travel the globe researching 16th-century handmade paper and to find imagery for their mixed-media work on paper and in tapestry. The Farnsworths employ a wide range of traditional printmaking and innovative digital methods developed at Magnolia Editions, where breakthroughs in techniques such as photogravure and weaving have led to editions by artists including Squeak Carnwath, Enrique Chagoya, Chuck Close, Guy Diehl, Hung Liu, Kiki Smith, Masami Teraoka, and William T. Wiley. See more artwork by the Farnsworths, and learn more about Magnolia Editions at www.MagnoliaEditions.com and more on re-creating 16th-century paper at www.MagnoliaPaper.com.

Faces of the East Bay

In the Philanthropic Swim

In the Philanthropic Swim

Rockridge residents John Bliss and Kim Thompson may live far removed the gritty flats of East and West Oakland. But this philanthropic couple see themselves as one with the citizens of Oakland, particularly those who are struggling financially, and they’re leading a campaign to get their “financially blessed” peers to invest in the community like they have by funding city programs to teach kids how to swim.
