The winner of The Monthly’s Fourth Annual Cover Contest, 16-year-old Drexler is a junior at Berkeley High School who comes from a family of art appreciators. Her winning image is meant to “convey a message of human empathy.” For more information on Drexler and the other student winners, see page 6. Local artist Elena Zolotnitsky will preside over an awards ceremony on Thursday, September 16 at 6 p.m.; Amsterdam Art, 1013 University Avenue, Berkeley. The ceremony is open to the public.

Rockridge residents John Bliss and Kim Thompson may live far removed the gritty flats of East and West Oakland. But this philanthropic couple see themselves as one with the citizens of Oakland, particularly those who are struggling financially, and they’re leading a campaign to get their “financially blessed” peers to invest in the community like they have by funding city programs to teach kids how to swim.
