Daniel Bullwinkel took this photograph of Nalia, a 4-year-old Alsatian (another name for German Shepherd) as she ran toward her new owner, Esten Ray, who has been volunteering with German Shepherd Rescue for the past three years. A lifelong photographer, Bullwinkel built his first darkroom at age 11. Since then, he has worked in many areas of commercial photography, focusing on portraiture, industrial and product work. When not at his informational technology day job, or photographing clients, he relaxes by doing nature- and macro-photography. Born in Berkeley, he now lives in Piedmont.
