Bridge the Gap (acrylic paint and collage). Piedmont High School graduate Kate Abel is the first-place winner of The Monthly’s annual student cover contest. The image is a self-portrait of Abel, 18, holding a child she met while on a church mission to build housing for the poor in Mexico. In her senior year art project, Abel contemplated how to show connections between disparate subjects. For this piece, she used sewing pattern paper and acrylic paint as the medium. Abel, who loves the work of street artist Banksy, said she has come to terms with the notion that all the art she creates might not be perfect. She will be attending Chapman University in Orange this fall and plans major in studio arts.
