Bernal Beat #1 (2015, 28″ x 20″, oil on wood panel). The painting is a continuation of the artist’s ongoing documentation of the Latin community in and around the Mission District of San Francisco. It depicts José Najera, who is entering the ’33 Chevy. He has a Latin funk band called the Bernal Beat, and he also is a member of the lowrider community. Artist Holdsworth also portrays Najera’s son, Eloy Cipriano Najera, the band’s keyboardist and sometime vocalist, in the painting; that’s him seated in the car. Viewers can also see the Najeras’ dog, Cha Cha. Holdsworth is hosting a reception 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, at the SFMOMA Artists’ Gallery at Fort Mason. José Najera will be bringing a scaled-down version of his band to perform at the reception.
