Academy of Sciences, San Francisco (acrylic on wood). Bay Area native Dave Conkle is a painter, illustrator, and photographer with a penchant for urban and rural landscapes and for animal portraiture. His latest works employ a technique he developed of hand-carving his illustrations into Baltic Birch wood panels and accentuating them with layers of stain and paint. He starts with careful selection of the panels themselves, letting their individual wood grain patterns spark the inspiration for the composition. He then further develops his illustrations by looking to his gallery of original photographs taken on his travels abroad, across the country or, as with this painting, locally in the Bay Area. Conkle can be reached at BigCityPeaches@yahoo.com. He is one of 125 artists featured in the 30th annual Emeryville Art Exhibition, Oct. 8-30. For Exhibition info, www.EmeryArts.org or 510-652-6122.
